“But, it is a big deal. It’s my first kiss.”

I heard Lottie’s voice through the decorations and the trees in her backyard but couldn’t see her. If there was some guy out here, trying to talk her into kissing, he had another thing coming. No one messed with Lottie.

The McKnights had put together an epic graduation party for me and Liam. I was flying high, on scholarship, feeling like the king of the world, and I’d called my dad to rub it in. To show him that I’d succeeded in spite of him leaving me behind. Only, Dad hadn’t been impressed. He’d said I was selfish and too young to know what success really was. He’d told me to grow up.

So I hadn’t felt like jumping back into the party and had wandered out of sight.

Curiosity won out, and I moved to hide in the back where the shadows were deep and long. I walked around the fountain/planter thingy and listened to see if I needed to pound some guy for getting handsy with my best friend’s sister.

“So I just…lean?” Lottie was talking to Sarah, not a guy. My heart rate went down a notch.

“Yeah. And he’ll do the rest.” Sarah snapped her gum. “I’ll go find him. You wait here.” She bounded away like an energizer bunny hyped up on Kool-Aid.

“But…” Lottie wrung her hands.

I smiled, bemused. It was sweet, really. The way she was stressed about kissing a guy. The least I could do was help put her mind at ease. We men weren't all that complicated. I stepped out of my hiding spot and into view, my feet loud on the pea gravel.

Lottie whipped around, and her face instantly turned tomato red.

“I, uh, couldn’t help but overhear.” I nodded in the direction Sarah had bounded off. “She’s right, you know. It’s not that big of a deal. It’s just kissing.”

“Kill me now.” Lottie turned away from me.

I frowned. First my dad treated me like nothing, and now she acted like I had no idea what I was talking about. Well, I’d show her. I closed the distance between us, took her arm and spun her around, letting her body land against mine. She was soft and curvy in the right places.

She gasped, her hands going to my chest.

“I’ll bet you’re better at kissing than you think,” I said before I pressed my lips to hers.

Lottie melted.

I’d never had a girl lean in so fully or give me such control over her lips. It confused and excited me. Even though Dad thought I was a failure at everything, Lottie trusted me. I threaded my fingers into her hair and cupped the back of her head.

Footsteps sounded close, and I stepped back, making sure she was solid on her feet. We looked at one another for a moment, and then I heard Liam call my name. Reality hit.

I’d crossed a line.

Big time.
